(1440-1505) Ivan III, also known as Ivan the Great, was the Grand Duke of Moscow from 1462 to 1505 and was responsible for consolidating the Russian state. In 1480 he freed Russia from bondage to the Tatars, or Golden Horde, who had conquered much of Russia in the 1200s. In 1497 he issued the first Russian legal code.
